Poor Habakkuk. He lived in a world which, to put it crudely, was being flushed down the toilet. The powerful of the land grabbed the best and the most, and if you had nothing, well that was just too bad. The political leaders did everything they could to hang on to power, coddling up to the unjust and ungodly, scoffing at justice and righteousness. Sounds pretty much like the 21st century.

Poor Habakkuk. Somehow he believed that God was in control, that God’s justice and mercy were to be the standard by which the world would be run. Foolishly, Habakkuk believed that good would prevail over evil, righteousness over wickedness. I am sure that he was told to wake up and smell the coffee.

But Habakkuk was steadfast. God had said; surely, God would do. He challenged God, what gives? He awaited God’s answer.

And an answer he got. It reaffirmed Habakkuk’s faith: God is still in control. Judgment was coming swiftly. The wicked would not prevail. Sheol’s mouth was open wide to receive them. Then the reassuring words, “The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him!” (Habakkuk 2:20)

Keep living by faith, Habakkuk. Keep living by faith.

Even when wickedness surrounds us, Lord God, help us live by faith. Amen. — DAB
