Sunday October 9th, 2016 Thanksgiving Sunday John 6:25-35
Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life." (verse 35)
Bread evokes some warm memories for me. I like nothing better than the smell of baking bread. My mother used to bake bread weekly. I especially loved to grab those still warm loaves, hack off the crust, smear on an unhealthy gob of freshly churned butter and enjoy. I sure hope there is fresh bread in heaven.
Jesus said, “I am the bread of life.” In part that means that Jesus is the staple of our spiritual diet, around and upon whom we build our spiritual lives. I wonder how well we do with our Jesus diet. Do we love to sit in Jesus’ presence, allowing his spirit to wash over us? Do our hearts quicken as we take the bread and wine in hand, knowing that in some mystical way, Jesus is present in, with and under them? Do we soak up the words of Jesus as we pour over the sacred texts? Do we cherish the Jesus we meet in the faces of those we encounter each day?
Jesus said, “I am the bread of life.” He is able to sustain and save us. But only if we eat. Eat heartily my friends.
(And by the way, this bread will be in heaven.)
Bread of Life, feed us unto life eternal. Amen. — DAB
