Wednesday September 21st, 2016 St. Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist Matthew 9:9-13
"Go and learn what this means, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners." (verse 13)
I recently learned about a wonderful program that assists children from transient families who move to our community for short periods of time while they transition out of difficult situations.
This program offers a safe place for children to go for a few hours each night. The minister on staff provides counselling and teaches life skills. More importantly, these children have a chance to make new friends.
The minister is a quiet, humble man who is always willing to help out. His ministry is often overlooked because he goes about his work without any pomp or pageantry.
The Pharisees question the disciples why their leader would choose Matthew, a tax collector, to follow him and sit and eat with sinners. They could not understand why he would surround himself with people they considered unworthy.
As Christians, we should help one another and spread the word of God. We should not judge or condemn those around us. Sharing a story from the Bible might change a life and give hope with a few kind words. We must all be willing to share God’s love with one another.
Dear Lord, may we be humble and willing to help the weak and less fortunate in our lives. Amen. — JR
