The Foolishness of God

No matter how soon my wife and I promise that food is on the way, when my son is hungry, he wants to eat now. When we are driving in the car and my son wants to get out, five more minutes doesn’t mean anything to him. When he has been warned that there is only one more story before bed, it doesn’t stop my son from asking for another.

When death seems so certain for us, the promise of new life seems impossible, unbelievable, improbable. It seems like foolishness.

Believing in God these days is generally not seen as a foolish idea in our world; lots of people seem to believe in some sort of power beyond themselves. However, believing that God can be met in a place like a stodgy old church with old traditions and old ideas, now that seems foolish. For many, believing that God is found at church sounds as crazy as “dinner is almost ready, just wait five minutes” does to my toddler son.

And yet God chooses this foolishness to be the vehicle of salvation. God chooses to love and save us in a way we cannot imagine or comprehend. Foolish indeed!

Foolish and saving God, remind us that your foolishness is all that is necessary for salvation. Amen. — EP
