Thursday July 28th, 2016 Hosea 11:1-11
I will not execute my fierce anger; I will not again destroy Ephraim; for I am God and no mortal, the Holy One in your midst, and I will not come in wrath. (verse 9)
As I sit and reflect on this text and on my surroundings this hot summer day, with the brown dry grass covering my yard, I am reminded that in a few short months, the lawn will once again be green, saturated by the rains that will fall upon us. I know this to be true, because I know that God is a keeper of promises. God will not destroy us. God’s love for us is like a loving parent who has no desire to see the children suffer. “My heart recoils within me; my compassion grows warm and tender.” (Hosea 11:8)
How fortunate for us to have these words to comfort us in all seasons, to remind us that God is with us forever. I can only imagine God’s disappointment when the people were turning away (Hosea 11:7), yet God still loved them, just like God loves all of us. We must be confident in this knowledge and be grateful for the life that we have.
Precious God, remind us that you keep your promises, just like a loving parent. Help us to love others, just as you love us. Amen. — SD
