A Voice in the Garden

Several years ago, the music director at our church announced her retirement after having served for many years. A friend told me I should apply for the job, and I remember telling her that I wouldn’t touch that job with a 10-foot pole. Now, fifteen years later I am still serving in the music ministry, loving every minute that I spend with the people here. It has been such a rewarding career, and I am so blessed to be able to serve in this way. But did I recognize Jesus at first, when Jesus spoke through my friend, encouraging me to step up?

How often do we miss the signs? When Mary saw Jesus in the garden, she did not recognize him until he called her by name. It is easy to ignore the calling; it is easy to close our eyes to the needs before us. Maybe we are worried that it will cause us to be too busy, or maybe we don’t feel qualified to take on the calling. We need to be accepting of whatever God calls us to do.

Compelling God, help us to hear your voice, recognize that what you ask of us is within our capabilities and give us the courage to answer positively. Amen. — SD
