Nana’s Birthday Cakes

When I asked the women in our Bible study group what they thought of this story of Mary and Martha, I was amazed when the ladies suggested that Martha really was the heroine after all. One lady clinched the discussion this way: “We’re catering a wedding. What if we just showed up with a plate of sandwiches because we were too busy with our Bible study to prepare the full menu?”

The Marthas of this world have a point! My wife Clarice is one of them-especially when it comes to baking our grandkids’ birthday cakes. When Ruby turned two, her cake contained every one of the Octonauts, along with icing figures of all the sea creatures that feature on this show. Nana may be a little over the top with these cakes, but they’re always a big hit.

But Jesus also appreciates the Marys of this world who are so good at snuggling up close to God as they enjoy the presence of Jesus in their lives.

Personally, I thank God both for the cooks who have brightened up our mealtimes and for my soulmate who challenges me to be a better man.

For all who make every day a love-filled day, we give you thanks, Lord Jesus. Amen. — BB
