Sunday June 26th, 2016 6th Sunday after Pentecost Luke 9:51-62
"Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?" (verse 54)
It happened just the other day. I was in the middle lane and realized that I needed to get in the right lane to make my exit. So I put on my blinker and was about to move over in a gap in the traffic when I realized the person in the right lane was accelerating. Now, I know I can’t read other people’s minds, but it sure seemed like that driver was doing that just to make my life hard. If looks could kill, there might be one less driver on the road today!
This kind of righteous anger can flare up over minor things. It really flares up when we are on a mission from God. The impulse is to punish, pay back or even destroy. What does Jesus model? Dust off your feet and move on to the next village. Who knows? Maybe that driver was having a bad day or was hurrying to pick up their child.
God of mercy, help us to be merciful. Amen. — PCH
