"What are you doing here, Elijah?" (verse 9)
Oh, it is easy to feel sorry for oneself. You have a great idea that you pitch to council and it gets shot down. You plan a marvelous event, advertise it well, and only one person shows up. Your lesson plan is brilliant; the children will certainly learn this concept. Then you spend the whole period trying to get the children to settle down. Bah!
Elijah had just won one of the greatest battles in the Old Testament. On behalf of God, he challenged, defeated and slaughtered (we moderns might think this was excessive), 400 prophets of Baal. God had proven to be the Lord of all, the one true God. Elijah was on cloud nine.
But Jezebel the queen was so outraged by Elijah’s victory that she ordered him put to death. Elijah fled, found a hiding spot, sat down and sulked. Who can blame him? Well, God for one.
Pick us up when we fall, Lord Jesus, then come with us as we minister in your name. Amen. — DAB
