It’s Who You Know

Nothing is more frustrating than jumping through all the hoops, dotting all the Is and crossing all the Ts, fulfilling every requirement, and still not getting the job. The person who gets the job is the boss’ niece. It happens all the time. And people console us with, “It’s not what you know but who you know.” It doesn’t seem fair. It can be devastating.

Well, Paul is saying that the kingdom of God is like that. We can keep every law and commandment there is. We can attend church every Sunday-twice if there is an evening service. We can sit on council, teach Sunday school, work with the youth, ladle soup at the soup kitchen, organize a food drive and sponsor a refugee. We could be kind to our neighbours, fair with our employees, just in our judgments. Our resum‚ might be impeccable. But the door is still closed. And then, to rub salt into our wounds, who does get in? The sinner whose heart was moved to faith, moved to say, “Lord, be merciful to me, a sinner.”

You see, in the kingdom of God, it is not what we do, but who knows us-Jesus.

Thank you, Lord Jesus, that you know us and have moved us to faith. Amen. — DAB
