"Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said?" (verse 13)
In looking over this lesson, our Golden Retreat study group found it rather astounding that this widow would simply take in a stranger. Who takes someone in just because they tell you that you should? She was simply out gathering firewood for her last meal, and she ends up taking in the prophet Elijah as a houseguest. As it turned out, things went very much in her favour.
At camp, there are many who arrive unsure of themselves and still find a place, whether they are campers or staff. Some find a special place in washing the dishes or cleaning a cabin with others. Some find a place just being a listening ear to someone who needs it. Some find that being a counselor or working maintenance is more than simply a summer job. We become part of a special community which, while short-term, has special meaning for those involved. We find that some people discover their talents while at camp, even if they weren’t looking for them.
And maybe this is what happened to that widow. She wasn’t looking to make use of her gifts when out gathering firewood. But because she took the risk, she reaped the rewards. You never know when God is going to make use of your talents.
Mighty Lord, help me to make use of any hidden talents. Amen. — LGR
