Revered?

One might wonder just why Mary is so revered. Yes, she was the mother of Jesus, but many women in history have given birth. Yes, she may have been a bit young to have a child, but even today teenagers have children. She wasn’t from a famous family; she had no earthly credentials to speak of. So, what was so special about her?

Her cousin Elizabeth recognized her uniqueness. In spite of any problematic consequences, Mary had accepted God’s will for her. She had this immense faith in God that, in the end, it would all work out, and she went ahead with following God’s plan.

Before we get to thinking we could never do anything like that, and that Mary must have had superhuman powers to go through with all this, we might consider the legend in Nazareth today, where there are two churches that commemorate the place of the annunciation. It is said the angel first appeared to Mary at the village well, but she was so terrified she ran all the way home, where the angel appeared to her again in order to finish off the message.

Mary felt the same way we might feel, and she continued onward. Thanks be to God!

Mighty Lord, allow your Spirit to guide me also to acts of faith. Bless me with the wisdom and courage to follow your will. Amen. — LGR
