Thursday May 19th, 2016 Psalm 8
O LORD, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have founded a bulwark ?. (verses 1-2)
An echoing devotion to God wells up from the past, rushing toward us from the songs and stories of faithful generations that have preceded us. Like a bulwark (a fortification or defending wall), the devotion of saints gracing our hymnals and worship resources stands firm through the ups and downs of our days.
Across the ages, ordinary people seeking to build lives of faith sang as they read scripture and set sacred word to music. They struggled as we struggle, and they have left their faithful work as both an anchor and path for our days. Long before us, they learned to give thanks and praise to the glorious maker of our universe at all times and left us a faithful blueprint to do the same.
Out of their mouths a bulwark has been founded, upon which we stand. As we sing their songs, our voices join theirs in a glorious chorus of faithful witness that spans both time and space.
Ancient of Days, thank you for the witness of the saints in light. Amen. — LH
