Eye of the Beholder

At the time of writing, my family is planning a Disneyland trip. It’ll be interesting, as it’ll be full of first experiences. For our kids, it will be the first time on a plane, to Disneyland, and in a hotel for more than two nights. For us parents, it’ll be our first time taking all our kids this far from home, for this long, and only with what we can stuff into carry-on bags (no way we’re paying extra for check-in luggage).

For our kids, it’s beyond exciting. For us parents, it’s beyond daunting. Don’t get me wrong, we fully expect to have fun, but I admit it’s also somewhat scary. Although we’re all going on the same exact trip, it’s viewed differently depending on age, past experience and overall mentality. This informs how we live these last few days before departure.

How do we view the promise of Christ’s return? Do we see it as judgment, shame and the punishing of evil? Or do we see it as redemption, hope and the full revelation of God’s love for all? If the latter, then together we can excitingly live in joy and peace, serving God and neighbour for the good of the world. If the former, then may God help you.

God, fill our lives with love and hope as we look forward to your coming kingdom. Amen. — NF
