Sunday May 1st, 2016 6th Sunday of Easter John 14:23-29
Jesus answered him, "Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them." (verse 23)
“Pinky Swear!” Kids have many ways to prove they will keep their word. As we get older, we discover the word of another isn’t always dependable. We add promissory notes, notary seals and the like.
Jesus gives his word to his disciples that the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, will come and remind them of all he has taught. They will receive the gift of peace that will enable them to believe and to rejoice, even after he is no longer with them. All he asks is they keep his word. All he asks is WE keep his word.
“Jesus, we swear! Oh, but Jesus, how often are you going to check? What happens if our word fails?” It is part of the Easter joy that Jesus continues to answer, “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.” (verse 26) The risen Christ keeps his word, and raises us again and again to live by faith.
Forgiving God, help us to live by your word. Renew us through your Spirit of peace. Amen. — MHD
