Most of us remember the Beatles’ classic song, “All You Need Is Love.” The lyrics at first seem hopeful, if not simplistic. However, when we consider Jesus’ words about love for one another, it becomes clear that the Fab Four were truly onto something.
Jesus’ new commandment to love one another is firmly rooted in the Hebrew scriptures’ call for justice, righteousness, and concern for one’s brothers and sisters. We are reminded of Micah 6:8, “What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”
I’ve heard it said that there is no fight like a good church fight. Whether we like it or not, the world is watching those of us who claim to be Jesus’ disciples, taking special note of how we treat one another. Every argument, dissension and split in the church gives fuel to the fire of those who would mock Christians and their faith.
While it is unreasonable that we would have total agreement in all things, it’s important that Christians remain respectful and loving of one another, even in disagreements, and that we show that love to all we meet.
God of love, grant a spirit of your love to all who call upon your holy name. Amen. — JG
