Friday April 22nd, 2016 Revelation 21:1-6
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away? (verse 1)
Nice warm days of spring will soon be upon most us, if not already here. It’s time to put away winter woollens and bring out spring clothing. But last year’s clothes don’t look just right, they don’t fit as they should, or the colour is out of style. Merchants understand our feelings quite well and are happy to display the finest new styles for our purchasing pleasure.
The life most of us have been living is also out of style, thanks to the life, death, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. In and through him we have the promise of something better, a new life in which mourning and tears, pain and death are no more.
In our reading today we have the comforting image of the holy city, the New Jerusalem, where all things are made new. God will dwell with us, and we will be God’s people. The one who is the beginning and the end will quench our parched throats with the refreshing water of life. We have the assurance these words are trustworthy and true.
God of new beginnings, we thank you for the promise of new life you have given us. Renew our strength and uphold our faith. Amen. — JG
