Lazarus

What if Lazarus had never died?

I have worked in long-term care for eight years, primarily with end-of-life ministry. I continue to be in awe and wonder at the process of death. It is such a richly spiritual time for those involved, even those with whom Christian faith has not been a priority. I am especially blessed when I am able to follow up with families after the death of a loved one. Death truly changes life for everyone.

When I reflect on all that Jesus did because Lazarus died, I am reminded that our limits are not God’s. God can do so many things in life and death. Much growth is only possible when we have experienced a death. As we walk through dark times and loss in our lives, let us remember that God’s gift of light is on the other side.

Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, God can and will use any situation in our life for good. Whether death is of a person, a time or place, God can use it to help us grow in new ways.

Lord of all comfort, thank you for surrounding us with your amazing love, for using all situations in our lives for your good, when we commit them to you. Amen. — KNM
