Deafening. As one now in my seventh decade, my adult children sometimes let me know that I don’t always hear so well. On occasion the woman who loves me deeply intimates that I may not listen so well either. But I can still hear loud sounds. Like the sound in an arena when the home team scores. LOUD! Like a gifted choir reaching a crescendo of gospel proclamation at Easter. LOUD!
Our lives encounter many sounds. Some are pervasive, even domineering. Others are soft, gentle, soothing. Some sounds would woo us into believing that they are the totality of reality. Like when a nation or empire pushes a belief that might is right, or that the GNP must be the first priority, or that we must take care of ourselves first and foremost. They insinuate, this is all there is.
But God says, “It isn’t so.” Jesus’ life, death and resurrection say, “It isn’t so.” The witness of many Christians before and after us proclaim, “It isn’t so!”
Only God is God. Through everything, God does and will reign. Are we listening?
O God, help us to hear you, to behold and participate in your good and gracious reign. Amen. — TBL
