Sunday March 6th, 2016 4th Sunday in Lent Luke 15:1-3,11b-32
"'Quickly, bring out a robe-the best one-and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. And get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; for this son of mine was dead and is alive again?!'" (22-24)
I live in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. Canada’s poorest postal code is located in the Lower East Side of Vancouver. Many people migrate to the Lower East Side when they are down on their luck, when they have little or no income, when they need a warmer place to be outside in our harsh winters. But once people come to the Lower East Side, it’s hard to escape. They too often become caught in the web of poverty, addiction and despair.
A woman I deeply cared about told me of her sister. Her sister lives in the Lower East Side. My friend would only occasionally hear from her, at Christmas or Easter. How my friend longs for her sister to come home, to be safe, fed, able to sleep in peace. I can only imagine if she were to come home today. What a party there would be!
As we speak with God, sip the wine, savour the bread, we are at home, with God. And there is joy beyond imagination.
God, thank you for blindly, even crazily, loving us. Amen. — TBL
