After the Mountain High

Jesus sounds exasperated. The very close encounter with God is ended. The mountain high is over-with a crash. The reality of anxiety and fear, pain and evil, unbelief and failure stare Jesus in the face.

The father begs: Our son is very ill. What happens to him is horribly frightening! Your disciples don’t know what to do. The doctors have no answers. He’s our only son. What if we lose him? He will die if you don’t do something! Help us! Please!

So, in spite of exasperation at his friends’ lack of faith, but affirmed by God and empowered, Jesus rebukes the spirit and heals the boy. And in so doing, Jesus defeats failure and fear.

O God, when our faith fails, when fear overwhelms, even then your love for us does not fail. Help us to return to you in our times of fear and failure. Amen. — HV
