"No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar, but on the lampstand so that those who enter may see the light." (verse 33)
Light has a physical quality. Rays of sunlight pushing out from behind a cloud bring brightness, often accompanied by heat.
Light also brings life. Plants twist and turn their stems and leaves to face light; with light, they grow. Further, there’s the expression, “Her eyes lit up,” which implies an immediate and increased positive reaction to something. When our eyes light up, we come to life.
Jesus said: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
As Christians, we hold that light, we are that lamp described in the verse above, and we are meant to bring brightness and warmth.
With the light of Jesus in us, we are called to draw others out of the darknesses of this world and into the life that is promised to us through Jesus.
Hold us in your brightness and warmth, Jesus, as we let your light shine in us and bring others into your light and into life everlasting. Amen. — BW
