Saturday January 9th, 2016 Mark 2:1-22
As [Jesus] was walking along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, "Follow me." And he got up and followed him. (verse 14)
I dream of winning the lottery and ditching my job. I
don’t, however, think that I would ever walk away from my desk to follow a man I didn’t know. But Levi did. Jesus walked by, spoke two words, and Levi left his job to follow Jesus. This verse always amazes me.
As Christians, we follow Jesus. But I often think about the times we don’t respond when Jesus calls. “Join the witness committee.” “Not interested.” “Participate in our Bible study.” “Too busy.” “Come with us to rally for affordable housing.” “No thanks.” “Read the lessons on Sunday.” “Too shy.” “Teach Sunday school.” “Can’t commit.” “Walk for reconciliation with our Aboriginal brothers and sisters.” “Not my responsibility.”
How would our lives and our world be different if, like Levi, we answered those calls in the affirmative, if we got up and followed Jesus?
Jesus, call me, lead me, teach me to follow. Amen. — BW
