The Peace of God

In times of devastation we often see huge trees uprooted and smashed to the ground. Tornadoes leave a path of destruction in their wake, obliterating houses and factories, overturning automobiles, and killing or maiming those people who were unfortunate enough to be unable to get to safety.

I have seen with my own eyes the aftermath of the tornadoes that hit both Barrie, Ontario, and Edmonton, Alberta, leaving piles of rubble behind. Yet far greater than these violent winds is the power for good found in our God who gives “strength to his people” and who “blesses his people with peace.”

Our world is in desperate need of the peace that only God can bring, especially in the midst of the turmoil that follows natural disasters of all kinds. There is a peace that comes to us through Jesus Christ which goes far deeper than any disaster. “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7)

O God of power and might, may we find our peace in you. Amen. — HF
