Is there anything like the relief of a long, cool drink of water when one is thirsty? And yet, no matter how much we drink, we know we will be thirsty again soon.
Like our need for water, our need for God’s grace is not a one-time thing. Throughout our lives, we return to the wells of salvation over and over. God’s love liberates us from the drive to succeed as the world measures it, but again and again, we find ourselves caught up in competition. We want to love and serve our neighbours, and then we realize that we are still most concerned about ourselves. Our world is hurting, our relationships are broken and we are wounded by life, and we need God’s healing.
So we come back to draw from the wells of salvation. We come for forgiveness, for hope and courage, to be reminded of God’s love and care, to be calmed and refreshed. The joy we feel is like the taste of fresh, cool water. And God’s wells are deep and constant, like an underground spring that never fails.
Loving God, we are freed by your grace, and your care for us is constant and trustworthy. Thank you for your deep wells of salvation. Amen. — JN
