Preparing by remembering

As we prepare for the celebration of Christ’s birth, we can grow spiritually by remembering and celebrating people who have shared the faith with us.

Is there one particular person who was very important in your spiritual growth?A Sunday school teacher, pastor, parent, grandparent, neighbour, friend who loved and encouraged you, someone who was willing to spend time answering your questions, talking with you about your doubts or just listening to you.

When I was a teenager, we had a pastor who listened to my often-not-very-informed opinions, and answered my questions with love and compassion. Although our church was often viewed as judgmental, I never had the feeling that he was judging me. Rather, he encouraged me to question and grow in faith by reading my Bible, praying and thinking for myself. This memory is important to me as I continue my faith journey by sharing with others in Bible study or worship or conversation.

Thank you, God, for memories and especially for memories of people who have helped and encouraged us to grow spiritually. Amen. — KIGN
