Repent!

When we are lost, we start looking for signs so that we can find our way. When all else fails, we read (heed) the directions. It seems we are always looking for signs.

God recruited Jonah to talk to the people of Nineveh. They were going the wrong way. Jonah was afraid to be God’s messenger so he ran away. God gave Jonah another chance to say yes. After three days in the belly of the whale, Jonah went and prophesied to the people of Nineveh and they repented.

Time passed. God saw that the people had once again lost their way. This time he sent the Son. The Son was sent to save the people, but the people killed him. After three days in the belly of the tomb, the Son rose from the dead, and the people were given yet another chance.

God loves us and gives us many opportunities to show our love for God and for each other. This Advent we anticipate the joy of another opportunity to please and obey a loving God.

Dear God of second chances, help us to repent. Help us to feel sorry for what we have done. Help us to ask for forgiveness. Help us to right the wrong. Help us to turn from sin. Amen. — MAC
