Behold the Lamb of God

Andrew did not have to be told twice. He and his brother, both fishermen, were followers of John the Baptist. One day, they saw Jesus, and John said, “Look, here is the Lamb of God!” Andrew recognised instantly that this was the Messiah and he told his brother Simon. He took him to see Jesus. Jesus renamed him Cephas, which means Peter. And then there were two.

The rest, as they say, is history. Jesus called more disciples from other walks of life to come with him, and they travelled about the territory around the Sea of Galilee with Jesus. They were now fishers of people. They stayed with Jesus at Capernaum and remained attached to Jesus as he went about the territory teaching and healing. Andrew was present with Jesus and the others at the Last Supper, and after the crucifixion of Jesus he continued to spread the good news along the Black Sea and into what is presently the area of Ukraine/Romania.

He, too, was crucified. He is the patron saint of Barbados, Romania, Ukraine and Scotland. The national flag of Scotland features the St. Andrew’s cross.

God, help us to see clearly with open hearts. Guide us in the paths we need to follow. Amen. — MAC
