Sunday November 29th, 2015 1st Sunday of Advent Luke 21:25-36
"There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves." (verse 25)
It’s beginning to look a lot like Advent. In today’s world where each holiday marks a new marketing opportunity, Advent doesn’t mean much. As soon as the ghosts and goblins and Halloween treats disappear or go on sale, the Christmas trees and the holly garlands appear.
However, if we let it, Advent can help us to prepare for the wonderful birth of our saviour, just as a pregnancy helps us prepare for the birth of a new member of the family. We can take the four weeks before Christmas and prepare ourselves by enjoying the anticipation of something wonderful.
An Advent wreath is a great tool to help us do that. Use an Advent booklet and read Bible verses that set the scene for the coming event; light a candle, enjoy some special food and drink and a quiet time with family or friends, and prepare for the coming of very good news.
You will still have lots of time to get gifts, make menus and decorate.
God in heaven, help us to remember the great gift we are about to receive and to use this time to refresh and prepare ourselves to celebrate the birth of your son, Jesus Christ. Amen. — MAC
