Saturday November 21st, 2015 2 Kings 22:1-10;23: 1-3
The king stood by the pillar and made a covenant before the Lord, to follow the Lord, keeping his commandments, his decrees, and his statutes, with all his heart and all his soul, to perform the words of this covenant...(verse 23:3)
A covenant is much more than a simple promise. It is an agreement between people to either do or not do something together. We don’t often make covenants with each other, but we do make promises.
Sometimes it’s hard to keep the promises we make. Not keeping promises may not be intentional, but it happens all the time. Sometimes life gets in the way, or circumstances change the way we feel or think about certain things. Sometimes, our own selfishness and weaknesses get in the way of keeping promises and covenants.
I need God’s help when I don’t feel like keeping a promise, fulfilling an obligation. Then I remember the covenants that God has made with us. I remember the new covenant in the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ and the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. When I remember the sacrifices made for me, I am inspired to fulfil my promises.
Faithful and loving God, help us to stay true to ourselves. Help us to fulfill our promises and covenants with you and with others. Amen. — GB
