At this moment the Hebrew people are at the height of their glory. They have their promised land, they have their king, and they have their religion. God’s promises have been fulfilled! Of course everyone is dancing and singing! But we know the story doesn’t end here. We know the Israelites will suffer many years of oppression.
As Christians, we see Jesus as both the fulfillment of God’s promise and the beginning of a new promise-of the kingdom of God. We have our king, and we have been taught how to live in God’s kingdom, and we are free to follow the teachings of Jesus. Why aren’t we dancing and singing all the time?
I suppose it is because God’s kingdom isn’t like David’s. It is not a city; it is not a physical place we can defend. It is something we work for, something we catch glimpses of, something that is, and something we are waiting for.
But in the meantime, let’s sing and let’s dance. It will make the work much easier.
Faithful God, as we live out your kingdom and as we wait for your kingdom, may we never forget to dance and sing to praise you with all of our being. Amen. — RL
