Tuesday September 15th, 2015 1 Corinthians 1:18-24
For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. (verses 22-24)
We all know these folks, don’t we? Show me something that will convince me that Jesus is God. Prove to me by sound reason and logic that Jesus is God. Then I will believe. Truly I will.
Sometimes we take the bait. We argue until we are blue in the face, quoting scriptures, marshalling every argument we have ever heard. We point to extraordinary occurrences, improbable healings. There. Can’t you see?
Well, of course not. All we really have to offer is Jesus the Messiah, who came to love us as we are, to heal, love and forgive. All we have is Christ, who hung on the cross like a common criminal, who rose from the dead on the third day. All we have is Jesus.
Ah, but that is enough. For Christ and the story of the cross is the very power of God. Christ crucified heals our brokenness, fills our emptiness, cleanses our sin, empowers our lives. Christ is all we need. Alleluia!
Christ crucified, fill my heart each day with your power and might, that I may serve you through serving others. In your holy name. Amen. — DAB
