Because the LORD your God is a merciful God, he will neither abandon you nor destroy you; he will not forget the covenant with your ancestors that he swore to them. (verse 31)
There is a never-ending pile of evidence that we as human beings will make choices that are counter to the ways of God. And as much as we are loved, we fall short of living that love forward. We stray from God’s side. We forget that we owe all things to God. We hear all of this and wonder how can God keep calling us back? How can God keep bailing us out of the deep holes we dig ourselves into? How can God keep forgiving us?
And then, we are reminded, the Lord our God is a merciful God, who will neither abandon us nor destroy us; God will not forget the covenant made with our ancestors and sworn with them.
What a wonderful God.
Merciful God, thank you for your promise to love us, care for us, provide for us and never abandon us. Help us to remember and keep our hearts turned toward you. Amen. — RS
