For the past couple of years, my wife and I have been purging things. We got rid of 2014 things in the year 2014. Same with 2013. But what amazes me the most is that even after getting rid of all that stuff, I can barely tell. Our house still seems full.
We often surround ourselves with stuff. We live in a culture and an economy that pushes the idea that if we aren’t constantly consuming, we’re not participating. And we always need to have extra, just in case.
The widow of Zarephath had almost nothing left. She only had enough for one last meal. But for God, that’s more than enough. Because of God, it was enough to feed her entire household and guests for many days.
Even when we feel that we don’t have enough, that we’re not good enough, smart enough, strong enough, courageous enough, faithful enough, God takes what we have and tells us that it is, actually, enough. We don’t need to stockpile things in order to secure ourselves. God secures our lives for us. God has already given us enough.
God of abundance, thank you for giving us enough. In faith, help us to see how you provide for us and carry us through our doubts and hardships. Amen. — JZ
