Monday August 3rd, 2015 Deuteronomy 8:1-20
?one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. verse 3)
Have you ever hung on every word someone has said? What was it about this person: his or her mannerisms, appearance or speech? Did your jaw drop at the challenges presented? Did your eyes widen or well up? Did the word that was spoken touch you profoundly, as if it was directed at you?
Yahweh is speaking to the Israelites, preparing them to enter the Promised Land flowing with milk and honey. God reminds them that through their journey, God has been with them, has given them commandments to keep, has fed them with manna from heaven. They lacked for nothing in the wilderness. God had responded to each cry. Still the people want more; still they are tempted by those commandments to do just the opposite to take advantage of everything that might come their way.
But the Lord is speaking to them. The word of the Lord is creative, calling forth new life. The word of the Lord is empowering, giving people a way of being and a way of living. The word of the Lord became incarnate to bring us all out of our wilderness into God’s light. Stand in awe, listening to the word which comes out of the mouth of the Lord.
Open our hearts and minds to your presence, Lord. Amen. — RC
