Pass on the Yeast

Were you ever allowed to stir the pot of soup which your grandmother was preparing? Did you ever witness your niece or nephew dressed in a big apron standing on a chair baking cookies with their mother or father? Or what about a grandchild standing next to you icing the muffin, making a happy face with sprinkles and chocolate chips? It certainly is a tradition passed down in my family.

Just as one recipe is passed down from generation to generation, so too is faith in the bread of life, Jesus Christ. I sometimes wonder whether it is easier to pass down recipes than to pass down the faith. Imagine the yeast that can be frozen and used over again and passed on as it continues to grow. Through worship and prayer, through Bible study and inward silence, God stirs a sense of belonging, a sense of something greater growing within our hearts and minds.

How might we share our experiences of faith from one generation to the next so that our faith in the Son of Man, the Bread of life continues to feed us daily?

Lord, give us each day from your Bread of life that we might pass on the yeast and let it grow. Amen. — RC
