Sunday July 19th, 2015 8th Sunday after Pentecost Mark 6:30-34;53-56
The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. He said to them, "Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while." (verse 30)
Have you grown weary? Have you become worn out by the work you’re doing? Does it all feel too much at times?
The disciples had been busy working for the kingdom. They had spent many days and nights on their separate journeys as they ministered to others. And they were probably extremely tired. Though the scripture doesn’t specifically mention their exhaustion, Jesus seemed to perceive their weariness and told them to come away with him and rest awhile.
Have you experienced the “coming away to a deserted place” and resting? Have you come to know the personal benefit of retreating by yourself and simply basking in the presence of God? Have you come to know the calm strength that is to be gained by quiet communion with the One who loves you so much that God sent Jesus to die for you?
Let us all take to heart the words Jesus spoke to his disciples, “Come away?and rest.”
Lord God, help us find rest in you. Remind us of the need to come away from the hustle and bustle of life and simply spend time with you, thereby finding the rest and refreshment we need. Amen. — KG
