Are We There Yet?

Are we there yet? Every parent has heard this question, full of enthusiasm about wanting to arrive. As the question is repeated, enthusiasm gives way to the boredom of “how much longer until we get there?” It is much like being at a church service of late. Attendance is down. The average age is rising. Children have all but disappeared. We need to remember we are on a journey.

Gloria Dei, Winnipeg, where I currently serve, had over 300 people combined at the two Christmas Eve Services. The fuller service was the early service aimed at families. Seeing the place full of young people in contrast to our normal attendance patterns was a hopeful experience. It is hopeful to know that this is our time to help the Holy One sow the seeds of faith in our midst and explore what is possible in the outcome. These 300 plus people continued the refrain “Are we there yet?” Now it is our turn to help show how much God has to offer those of us still on the journey.

Patient God who waits for us, help us remember what is possible, and give us the courage to take bold actions to make your vision possible. Amen. — RDL
