Stepping Up

“Why did I ever volunteer?” If you have ever been involved in any of the numerous groups that are part of congregational life, you may have asked yourself this same question. Sometimes we discover situations that make us feel like we are in over our heads. We wonder why we opened our mouths before realizing what we were getting ourselves into.

Today we celebrate Canada Day, and one of the things we celebrate is the wonderful nation we’ve become. At some point in our history, there were probably people who signed up to lead who felt that they were in way over their heads and wondered if it was all worth it. It is not easy to step up.

As Christians, there are times we don’t volunteer of our own accord; God commissions us, as God did Ezekiel. The Spirit enters in and we step up. And while we may wonder what we got ourselves into, we most often find that we are part of a wonderful process of bringing things together, where even the most stubborn of us realize there has been a prophet among us.

Almighty Lord, we are often hesitant to be part of leadership on your behalf. Help us overcome our fears and feelings of being overwhelmed, and give us your guidance. Amen. — LGR
