"By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return." (verse 19)
I recently reread the book of Genesis using a Bible without chapters or verse markings. What an epic story! If you haven’t read the Bible this way I suggest you give it a go.
The Bible is a tough book from which to draw life lessons. It tells of God’s people doing horrible things to one another. It tells of God forgiving, teaching, cursing, destroying and raising up, and guiding the people all the way through. Ultimately, it’s a narrative of a God who didn’t abandon the people.
Lord God, help us to take the stories of our ancestors and wrestle with them as we figure out how to live. Comfort us in the difficult times and give us hope that we all will be gathered in your loving arms. Amen. — SB
