Tuesday June 2nd, 2015 Mark 4:21-25
He said to them, "Is a lamp brought in to be put under the bushel basket, or under the bed, and not on the lampstand?" (verse 21)
When I was a teenager, I went on an overnight school trip to the Bellevue mine museum in southern Alberta. We were all given hard hats with headlamps in order to tour in the inside of the mine. We made our way deep into the mine. We saw coal shafts, carts, pickaxes and other mining tools. We looked closely at coal veins in the rocks. At the end of the tour, the guide had us take off our headlamps and put them against our shirts so that only a little light could be seen. This was to show how much light the coal miners from 100 years before had to work with. It wasn’t much.
The guide asked our group if we wanted to try making our way out using just that little bit of light. Amazingly, after our eyes adjusted, with just that little bit of light, we made our way.
It doesn’t make sense to put a lamp under a basket, yet even still its light will shine through. Jesus is willing to work with even that little bit, to shine through it in the most unexpected places and with the most unexpected people.
God of light, shine your light through us. Amen. — EP
