The Lions of Life Can Be Scary

Our daughter was born prematurely at 28 weeks, weighing only 2 lbs, 3 oz. It was a difficult pregnancy, filled with uncertainty and fear; at times it felt like we had been thrown into the lions’ den. My husband, a full-time PhD student at the time, studied and took care of our three-year-old son, while I recovered, cared and prayed for our daughter. Divided attentions, long commutes, fragility of this new life-the lions were larger than life.

As a pastor, I know there are no guarantees in life, and I knew that our daughter faced huge challenges in those first days of life. I knew that life was fragile. I prayed for deliverance from my fears, because it was fear that exhausted me, made it hard to breathe; fear that locked me in the lions’ den.

When we cry out to God to remove our fears, we begin to live and trust that life is stronger than death, light is brighter than darkness, and hope is a powerful reminder that God is in the midst of all life, a presence much bigger than any lion.

God of deliverance, open our hearts to dispel our fears and fill us with hope in you. Amen. — TLR
