A Foundation of Faith

Several years ago, when I was a part of Habitat for Humanity Canada, I was always reminded of a hymn from my childhood that sings of building hope on Christ as our solid rock. Habitat builds homes for low-income families who assist in the building of the home and then assume an interest-free mortgage. Every home the organization builds for a worthy family rests on a structurally sound foundation and spiritually strong beliefs. Prayer accompanies every significant milestone from choosing the family to the house dedication. The family participates in the build, learning new skills, learning a renewed power of faith. I learned how to install drywall and vapour barriers. I sanded and painted and even traveled to Winnipeg to help build fourteen homes in one week, a true labour of love and of hope-God’s love through us to families who deserve a hand up and a little more hope in their lives.

Every day of the build begins with devotions. When a family takes possession of the home, they are presented with a Bible and a hammer. The community has come together to build the home on a firm foundation; now they gather to bless it.

Dear Lord, bless us and help us to meet life's challenges with love and hope that rest on a firm foundation of faith. Amen. — BG
