Tuesday March 10th, 2015 Mark 11:15-19
"Is it not written, 'My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations'? But you have made it a den of robbers." (verse 17)
All four gospels have accounts of Jesus cleansing the Temple. Only John places the story at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, a metaphor for what is to follow and a clear message of what he expects from us. His message is that our faith cannot be expressed through rituals, but through acts of kindness in our everyday lives-environmental concerns, the homeless, the abused, all those who are marginalized-acting out of a sense of justice and love.
We are called to follow Jesus’ example. He was constantly disrupting things, the religious establishment, individuals’ lives. We, too, are often afraid to step out and step up. What will the neighbours think? My co-workers? My family? And we ignore the most important question, What will Jesus think?
What we do on Sunday must reflect what we do Monday through Saturday. Volunteer at the food bank. Walk in Take Back the Night marches. Work overnight at Out of the Cold and then lobby your church to be one of the locations. Be aware of the need and want around you. Follow his example.
Dear God, help me to follow the example of Jesus, to stand against injustice, to work for peace and love. Amen. — BG
