Wednesday February 25th, 2015 2 Corinthians 5:20b-6:10
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (verse 21)
What a mind-boggling concept! Jesus, the sinless, righteous one, became sin that we could become righteous. Righteous means “free from guilt or sin.” It is beyond our comprehension.
As I’m writing these words, a hymn is playing on my playlist. “Amazing love, how can it be, that you, my God, should die for me?”* Amazing love! Amazing grace!
Jesus took the penalty of our sin and paid it. Through him we are made the righteousness of God. That truth is life-changing. It is revolutionary.
I don’t need to travel through life weighed down with guilt over my past. Jesus took all my sins, big and little, and paid for them, forever cancelling my debt. I have been forgiven and made righteous. You have been forgiven and made righteous-free from guilt or sin.
As we journey through the Lenten season, Holy Week and Easter, let us remember the price Jesus paid. But let us also remember that the price has been paid. We no longer need to feel guilt or shame because of our sin.
God, help me to grasp the truth of this. Help me to live confidently and joyously in the reality of forgiveness. Amen. — KDG
