Remember the Rainbow

Have you received, like Noah, a “covenant,” a promise that you know is from God? We’ve all received the promise of being called children of God through the gift of salvation. As our loving parent, God delights in protecting, guiding and blessing us. Very often, whether through prayer or scripture reading, God whispers special words of promise to us, God’s children.

Think of the children you love, nieces/nephews, children/grandchildren, students, clients or patients. When you make a promise to them, you intend to fulfill it. You do your utmost to honour your word.

I’ve often wondered why I doubt God’s loving promises, both those written in the Bible and those indelibly impressed in my spirit. If I, in my human frailty and vulnerability, do whatever I can to fulfill my promises to “my” children, can I not trust the ultimate, omnipotent, all-loving parent, God, to fulfill God’s words of promise to me?

We are children of the same God who gave Noah the promise and the rainbow. We can face any storm in life with confidence because we, too, have the rainbow as proof of God’s care for us.

Remind me that I, like Noah, have received the promise of your love and care. Amen. — KDG
