Sunday January 11th, 2015 Mark 1:4-11
?he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. (verse 10)
Have you ever stood outside and felt the warm rays of the sun shining down on you; you close your eyes, tilt your face to the sun and take in that warmth, that peaceful energy?
That’s what came to mind when I read this gospel passage. We have seen pictures of this event, and in many we see Jesus’ head tilted back, face toward the heavens, a dove over him as he takes in the Holy Spirit, hearing the words, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.” (verse 11)
We, too, are loved by our heavenly Father, and the Holy Spirit that descended on Jesus, descends on you and me. That same Holy Spirit gives you and me strength and guidance to deal with our day-to-day challenges. Some challenges are hard to deal with on our own. But we are not alone; we just need to remember to close our eyes, tilt our face to the heavens and listen to God’s voice, follow God’s guidance and enjoy God’s presence in our lives.
Lord, we tilt our face to the heavens and ask that the Holy Spirit fill us with the strength, peace and knowledge of your love. Amen. — MJ
