Simon Peter, emotional, impulsive, at times insightful, and easily discouraged! Jesus knew Peter needed extra attention so he could discipline himself to stay the course in Jesus’ absence. So Jesus asks this hurtful question three times: “Do you love me?” Jesus knows Peter loves him but he wants Peter to focus on him and on the work he has laid out for Peter to do in the days ahead. Feeling the love is not all that is required. Being loving and doing loving acts is even more important.
Are there times when you need extra encouragement to follow Jesus in your daily life? Who brings that word of life to you? God works in very mysterious ways to speak to our hearts. God’s Holy Spirit speaks to us through others, sometimes through pictures or poetry or even the news. Give thanks for the Holy Spirit’s work in you and in others for you. Keep your ears, minds and hearts open to hear that precious voice.
Patient God, we too often become discouraged. We are so thankful that you use your Holy Spirit to find us and speak to our hearts. Send it to us in whatever way you think we will best hear your word. Encourage us to act in your name and for your glory. Amen. — SB
