An Heir of What?

The language here is a bit of a stumbling block for us. Today we seldom seriously think of ourselves as slave, and once we become adults we seldom think of ourselves as children. But through it may not happen often, we would certainly have no trouble thinking of ourselves as heirs.

Heirs of what? God’s creation of the world and all it offers; God’s abundant love, gracious comfort, vigilant protection, common sense guidance for living in community; God’s Son Jesus, and through him, precious forgiveness, all kinds of healing, blessed reconciliation and eternal salvation.

WOW! Bring it on!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, gracious God, for all that you provide. Open our eyes to see, our ears to hear, and our hearts to embrace our abundant inheritance from you. Open our arms then to share that inheritance with everyone we meet, that they, too, may know and live in your extravagant love. Amen. — SB
