I like magic tricks. No. Let me rephrase that. I love magic tricks. Even simple ones can lift my spirits from glum to chipper in the flip of a card or the flash of a coin. It doesn’t matter how simple or elaborate, if it looks like magic, I enjoy it. I’ve never tried to learn any tricks myself because despite my curiosity, I don’t want the illusion spoiled.
God’s miracles aren’t illusions or tricks. We’re not being misdirected or fooled into thinking we’re seeing something we’re not. It’s the genuine article because God can do anything and doesn’t need sleight of hand to do it. In a world where we are bombarded with lies, half-truths and untold truths, we can be sure that God is not fooling us. God shines as a beacon of honesty and truth. All we have to do is accept it and stop looking for the sleight of hand we think we’re missing.
Powerful Lord, help us to find your message among all the trickery of our world and to accept it for what it is. Amen. — CB
